La Palma, a paradise for explorers, hikers and nature lovers.
La Palma offers countless opportunities to discover the beautiful landscape on its hiking trails. The small island has almost 1.000 km of signposted trails. That’s an impressive number compared to the overall size of the island. Surely you have already seen one or the other signage, but what does it mean. Because not every trail is the same.
When hiking on La Palma, the routes are divided into colours:
GR or large routes (red/white flags): These hikes consist of several daily stages.
PR or small routes (yellow/white flags): These hikes can be done within a day. Altogether, there are 19 larger and 23 smaller PR.
SL or local paths (green/white flags): These trails are usually less than 10 km long and connect the larger hiking trails or are small local hiking trails. The marking of the route also tells you in which municipality the trail is located.
Always keep in mind: If you go down, you have to go up again! La Palma is one of the steepest islands in the world, compared to its size. Therefore: exhausting climbs are not uncommon. We recommended to book a transfer so you do not have to walk a path twice and manage to escape one or the other ascent.
For planning and orientation a hiking map will help.
Tips for hiking on your own:
Look carefully at the given altitude during the planning. Do not overestimate your condition
Pay attention to the signage of the trails
In heavy rain the otherwise dry ravines suddenly fill with water. At those times you should avoid hikes that run in a gorge. Leave gorges immediately when it starts raining heavily.
Heat & Cold: In extreme heat, you should consider whether you prefer to move your hike to another day. Be sure to bring enough water, sunscreen and a hat. In the high altitudes (over 2.000 m), it can be cold in winter. Never forget appropriate clothing.
Wear sturdy shoes, we recommend hiking shoes.
To find the perfect hike on La Palma, you should ask yourself some questions in advance.
How demanding and how long should your hike be? Which landscape interests you in particular? Would you like to get to know the original and green north? Excite you the volcanic and the young south or the imposing mountain landscape? A small overview of our walks on La Palma should be a small help with selecting.
La Palma has also been described as a miniature continent. The island shows a thousand facets, not only during the day, but also at night. Every night, the sky above the small Canarian Island turns into a glittering starry firmament.
We all know the Milky Way, but have you ever seen it with your naked eye? The spangled sky of La Palma is truly impressive … you shouldn’t miss this experience. On the island’s highest mountain, the Roque de los Muchachos (2.426 m), this display of nature turns into a true spectacle, for here, the stars seem to be within the viewer’s grasp.
Let us tell you why.
5 reasons why La Palma has one of the most beautiful starry skies of the world
1. Law against light pollution Yes, this law really exists and regulates the luminous intensity and the alignment of exterior lighting. The darker the night, the better we can see the spangled sky.
2. The sky is clear and pure The sky above La Palma is amongst the clearest and purest of the world and offers a clear view, almost like in space.
3. Flyover ban It is illegal to fly over the island with passenger planes which protects the sky from being polluted.
4. Science & Scientists On the Roque de los Muchachos, one of the world’s largest telescope arrays is located. Many scientific facilities are located on La Palma because of the uniqueness of its spangled sky. Even the prominent scientist Stephen Hawking came to look at it a few years ago.
5. Almost no industry La Palma has no industry to speak of and no big cities. Here, the small island amidst the Atlantic Ocean scores doubly.
“We could do the website ourselves!” But why independence on La Palma?
First, it was a pragmatic decision to choose this island. After our A level exams, we needed some downtime and favored Spain for this. Looking for a vacation rental suitable for our financial scope, we found something on La Palma. There, we had discovered an inexpensive vacation rental matching our expectations. We quickly booked, and what was probably one of the most beautiful times in our lives started. We lived on the sunny island for two months. With our rental car, we discovered the island and found unique places, beautiful beaches and fascinating landscapes. We also got to know the friendly, open people and the tasty cuisine of La Palma.
“A very special island”
It quickly became clear to us that La Palma is a special island. Every day, we fell a little more in love with this small island amidst the giant Atlantic Ocean.
Our idea was born from our own experiences looking for leisure opportunities. Specifically, it arose from our idea of a fishing trip on the island. After a while, we found a flyer that contained no direct booking opportunity. So we went to the address on the flyer. We ended up at a parking garage in the middle of the city. No port in sight, and somehow this looked more like a workshop than like a company offering fishing trips. Despite our bumpy search, we experienced a great trip and kept thinking about our idea.
Back in Germany, we started planning and writing up a business plan. After this hurdle was cleared, we had to fine-tune the idea and create a website. Alas, this is usually depicted much easier than it turned out to be. After several meetings and phone calls with web designers we found out that the website we mentioned would be way beyond our budget.
What to do? We got creative and decided to do the website ourselves. In our two-room apartment, we created a small workspace in the living room and simply started. After a while we found out that this way of working was pretty draining. We were only able to work on our website after our full-time job. This often meant working late hours. However, the idea of doing this for ourselves helped us to keep up our spirits and not lose our enthusiasm.
After many hours of learning new techniques, reading legal texts, getting some help from programmers and a nerve-wrecking, exciting time, we have made it. We are finally online!
