Hike Volcano Route

The Volcano Route can possibly be described as the most spectacular and impressive trek. At 1.440 m above sea level, our route starts from the Refugio el Pilar. The three neighbouring islands can be clearly seen on the horizon. After a gentle descent, we reach the Martin Volcano, which can be distinguished by its red tones contrasting with the green pine forests. When we get to Fuencaliente, we will have shown us how the inhabitants of the island used to have to carry their merchandise from the north to the south.

Description

Hiking along the Volcano Route

The Volcano Route can possibly be described as the most spectacular and impressive trek, because of the dramatic volcanic landscapes and the incredible views of the two sides of La Palma from a range of 2.000 m high mountains. The entire Cumbre Vieja (Old Peak) is an enormous volcano that has burst into life from time to time over the years. From the Refugio El Pilar to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse, an infinity of craters from different ages are scattered across a lunar landscape.

Hiking the Volcano route is fantastic! We started the trip from El Pilar and finished it in Los Canarios, Fuencaliente. The hike is challenging, with many ups and downs, but the scenery you get to enjoy while doing so makes it all worth it! The various panoramas of the beautiful landscapes we got to immerse ourselves in were a great reward.

Some advice: When you do this hike, remember to pack PLENTY of hydration. Personally, I drank approximately three liters during the trip, and there is no way to refill your water after you start the hike. We hiked up during Calima (hot Sahara winds), so it was unexpectedly warm. A lot of those ridges are very exposed, so remember to apply plenty of sunscreen as well. Qualitatively good shoes are also recommended, not only good soles, as the ragged volcanic stone has a solid chance of ripping your cheaper shoes apart. If you don’t have any, rent them, you won’t regret it.

All in all, it was a fantastic adventure that I will happily recommend to anyone interested!

Exhausted but sooo happy and fulfilled: The volcano route is a dream of changing landscapes, spectacular views and own borderline experience. We were there at the end of December and I was unsure in advance whether I could do the almost 18 km without any problems. But it was also feasible as an inexperienced not very young hiker. Tip: Walking sticks are very helpful on the uneven, rough surface. And definitely take enough water and food with you, there is nothing on the way – and don’t forget the sun protection!
Our guide guided us safely and explained everything great. Very personable, not pushy and yet also considerate the weakest of the group.
An overall wonderful experience and highly recommended!

By coincidence I chose this hiking route. We met early in the morning at the entry point. It was a group of 7 adults with different hiking experiences and hiking conditions. As described, it is a demanding tour, but with every breathtaking view rewarded every step !! The weather was fantastic, the varied landscape fascinating and the guide great! Even if every muscle hurts today, it was more difficult for me to climb the mountain than to climb, I would do this route again. Many thanks also to the guide, who always provided exciting explanations! Most beautiful experience in a long time!

This hike is simply beautiful. We were lucky with the weather and the view was certainly often unique because of that. I was thankful for my good hiking shoes and hiking poles and for having enough food and water with me. For our small hiking group, we had a very pleasant, competent and non-intrusive hiking guide at our side, who made us aware of special natural phenomena. In the evening I was very tired, but also very happy about this wonderful experience.
